Most birthday wording guides are long lists of examples. The more useful question is what actually changes as the guest of honour gets older, because that is what determines the wording.

For young children the invitation is really a logistics document for parents. For teenagers the tone matters more than the details. For adults the main job is signalling what kind of evening it is. For milestones the number is the headline.

## First and second birthdays

Half your guests are parents managing a nap schedule. Precision helps more than charm.

> **Leo turns one!**
> Saturday, March 14 at 10:00am to 12:00pm
> 42 Maple Lane
> Brunch for the grown ups, cake at 11
> Please let us know about allergies when you reply
> RSVP by March 7

Give a start and an end time. Say when cake happens, because parents plan around it. Ask about allergies in the invitation rather than in a follow-up thread.

## Kids, three to twelve

The two questions every parent has are whether to stay and whether to bring a sibling. Answer both.

> **Maya is turning 6!**
> Saturday, June 15, 2:00pm to 4:00pm
> Lincoln Park Pavilion, 800 W Fullerton
> Pizza, games and cake. Drop off is fine for ages 5 and up
> Siblings welcome
> RSVP by June 8

If you need a firm headcount for a venue, say why. "The trampoline park needs final numbers by the 8th" gets a faster reply than a bare deadline.

## Teens and sweet sixteens

Let them set the tone, and keep the parent logistics in a separate line so the invitation still feels like theirs.

> **Zoe's Sweet Sixteen**
> Friday, October 3 at 7:00pm
> The Crystal Room, 210 Bell Street
> Dress up. There will be a photo wall
> Pick up at 11pm
> RSVP by September 26

## Adult birthdays

The wording should tell people what kind of night it is. "Drinks" and "dinner" set very different expectations about eating beforehand.

> **Cheers to Marcus**
> Saturday, November 21 at 8:00pm
> The Terrace Bar, 15 Wharf Road
> Drinks and small plates. No gifts please, just come
> RSVP by November 14

"No gifts please" is worth including if you mean it. Guests find it genuinely useful, and without it several will ask you privately.

## Milestone birthdays

Lead with the number. It is the reason people will rearrange their weekend.

> **Daniel Turns Forty**
> Saturday, October 24 at 7:00pm
> The Gilded Room, 88 Harbour Street
> Dinner, dancing and a few embarrassing photographs
> RSVP by October 10

For a surprise party, put the secrecy instruction first, in bold, and repeat the arrival time. This is the one case where redundancy is your friend:

> **Shhh! It is a surprise**
> Please arrive by 6:45pm. Sam arrives at 7:00pm
> Do not post about this anywhere

## A note on tone

The most common wording mistake is not being too casual or too formal. It is hedging. "No pressure at all, totally fine if you cannot make it, sorry for the short notice" reads as though you would rather they did not come. Invite people warmly and let them decide.

## Making it easy to reply

Whatever the wording, the RSVP has to be effortless. Anything that asks a guest to create an account or download something loses replies from exactly the people you most want there, usually older relatives.

On [Easy Vite](/) each guest gets a private link that opens straight to the invitation with no account needed, and replies come back split into adults and children, which is the number you actually need for catering. ## Common questions

### Should I put the age on a birthday invitation?

For children, yes, because it tells other parents whether their child is the right age for the party. For adults it is optional, and for milestones it is usually the point.

### How do I ask for no gifts without sounding ungrateful?

Keep it short and warm: 'No gifts please, your company is the present.' Guests generally appreciate the clarity, and without it several will message you to ask.

### What wording works for a surprise party?

Lead with the secrecy instruction, give an arrival time that is at least fifteen minutes before the guest of honour arrives, and repeat both. Add a line asking people not to post about it.
